Agent-First Design: Enterprise Software Has a Second User

Think your opinion did not matter in the last software pilot? Good news: large organizations are now giving AI agents a vote.

Meta is reportedly moving employees from Google Chat to Slack because Slack is better for AI agents.

It is easy to dismiss that as a Meta story. It is not. A large organization is choosing to spend money not only on software, but also on the disruption, change management, retraining, and inevitable complaints that come with moving thousands of people to a different platform.

And agent accessibility is part of the reason.

That is kind of a big deal.

Enterprise software has a second user now

For decades, enterprise software was judged mostly by the human experience. Is it easy to use? Can people find the right screen? Does it integrate with the tools they already use?

Those questions still matter. Humans are annoyingly attached to being able to use the software they pay for.

But now there is another question: can an AI working on behalf of that person safely get work done in the platform?

An agent does not care whether the dashboard has rounded corners. It cares whether it can discover the available actions, retrieve the right context, understand the business rules, operate under the user’s permissions, and leave an audit trail when it changes something.

That is not just an API question. Lots of vendors can say they have APIs. The useful question is whether those APIs expose the things that matter: the logic, identity, permissions, workflow states, and exceptions an agent needs to operate without inventing a workaround.

We have seen this movie before

Everyone compares AI to the dot-com era. The mobile-web comparison may be more useful.

First, every business needed a website. Then phones changed how people consumed software. Responsive design became a requirement. Then mobile-first became a strategy.

We may be watching the start of the same shift: agent-first design.

Not design that puts AI ahead of people. Design that lets AI remove the work people never wanted to do in the first place:

  • Clicking through seven screens to find a customer record.
  • Searching three systems for the current policy.
  • Copying data from one tool into another because the integration was apparently a future problem.
  • Filling out a form just to begin a workflow nobody enjoys.

Mobile-first made software easier to use from anywhere. Agent-first could make it so people have to use the software a whole lot less.

What buyers should start asking

The next enterprise-software evaluation should add a few questions:

  • Can an agent discover and use the platform’s business capabilities without scraping the screen?
  • Does it inherit the employee’s identity and permissions?
  • Can the agent explain what data it used and what it changed?
  • Are approvals, exceptions, and policy boundaries exposed in a usable way?
  • Can the organization monitor and revoke agent access?

The vendor that wins may not be the one with the flashiest copilot. It may be the one whose platform gives agents a safe, governed way to do real work.

Agent accessibility may sound like an extreme idea today. So did responsive design before everyone started trying to use a desktop website on an iPhone.

The real goal is not software designed for robots. It is software designed so people can spend less of their day pretending clicking is a skill.
